Depending on the jurisdiction, in some places a man might receive up to a ten-year sentence if convicted of rape. In countries governed by religious leaders, the punishment can be much worse. A few cultures still practice stoning someone to death, or cutting off their hands. By contrast (depending on the jurisdiction) a woman might get just one year in jail if it's proven that by accusing a man of rape, she filed a false report. There's no justification for rape and certainly the punishment for such a crime should be harsh... some even suggest castration. But, given the severity of the penalty a person would pay for raping someone, I wonder if it's fair that the punishment for falsely accusing another of the same crime is so much less.

Here in Philippines.. Reclusion temporal shall be imposed to the offender if found guilty...so 20 years the offenders should spent on jail not like before we use to have lethal injections for them if only our government didn't revised the penal code of the Philippines.

It's terrible on the news media's part when someone, either a famous individual or just an everyday person, is accused of rape, and the accusation gets a lot of media spotlight before all the evidence is given. Then, if the accused is found innocent, the media usually will report this briefly. Hence, many people don't get the message. They never hear the truth, and the accused often lives the rest of his or her life having a tarnished reputation.
Any news reporter, newspaper, TV station, etc. that does this should be sued and then some. The falsely accused deserve the same amount of media spotlight after the charges have been dismissed. And as a society, we must demand this more from the media.

This is a difficult issue for me. On the one hand I've got nothing but contempt for rapists and on the other I do know that sometimes wires get crossed or people even tell lies.
I do worry about the fact that in rape cases (especially in the States) the presumption of innocence seems to have been replaced by a presumption of guilt.

I do worry about the fact that in rape cases (especially in the States) the presumption of innocence seems to have been replaced by a presumption of guilt. That seems to be the case regarding sex crimes... accused child molesters don't fare well in prison. Murderers and thieves suddenly develop righteous indignation.

I think that rape should be punishable by death or life imprisonment, especially when theses offenses involve children. The reason I say this is because more often than not, when you hear of those cases involving missing and murdered children, 9/10 the sex offender is the culprit. Castration doesn't always stop them and there have been quite a few 'fixed' rapists that end up committing murder. By making this an offense punishable by death then it lessens the likelihood of a repeat offense. I have heard of many cases in which a woman had falsely accused someone of rape, I think the most recent case I've heard of involved a woman who falsely accused an innocent man and he was sent to jail for 20 years and served 4 of them. She said she did it because her friends didn't believe what really happened that night. They didn't believe her story that she was 'abducted' and laughed at her and decided to lie because she wanted them to feel bad. She only gets 1-3 years. www.nypost.com/p/news/local/bronx/woman_confesses_prison_lying_about_lJf4uefP5UGa8iU2tWviFII think that in situations like that, anyone who falsely accuses a person of something like this, especially where their lives are changed forever because of the accusation, and incarceration, that they should serve double the time that the innocent person got, and they should suffer the same ill effects of a tarnished reputation as the person they accused.

"I think that rape should be punishable by death or life imprisonment"
[she] "decided to lie because she wanted them to feel bad."
Once the mud sticks you can never get it off again. Perhaps in cases like that, the (false) accuser should be punished by death or life imprisonment too.
